There are four easy steps to make sure your fireworks night with Blackwidow Fireworks is fun and safe for everyone!

  1. Plan your fireworks night.
  2. Set up the fireworks safely.
  3. Light the fireworks safely.
  4. Clean up, of course.

Be prepared, do the right thing, and enjoy the show!

  1. Plan your fireworks night

Look after your neighbours! Tell everyone who lives close by and who might hear your fireworks. It is always best to talk in person with your neighbours and to also give them a written note about the fireworks. You could give them our free Blackwidow Fireworks advice sheet, including the RSPCA’s advice for pet owners. All you have to do is fill in the time and date of your fireworks and give it to your neighbours!

Work out where you are going to use your fireworks. Look for an area that has at least 10 metres across of clear ground, with a flat area in the middle.
Get the stuff you need, a bucket of water, a hose and a torch.
Make sure your own pets are safe. Follow the advice in our free Blackwidow Fireworks advice sheet, including the RSPCA’s advice for pet owners
Don’t use any fireworks when you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

  2. Set up your fireworks

    • Read the instructions carefully, on the pack and on the firework.

    • Find a flat spot with at least five metres space in each direction.

    • Make sure everyone is at least five metres away from the spot where you are going to light the fireworks, and that your bucket of water and hose are handy.

    • Set up the safety stand, provided free and exclusively by Blackwidow Fireworks.

    • Before you set up a firework, check it to make sure it is not damaged.

    • Return any damaged fireworks to the supplier or to your WorkCover Authority.

    • Check the fuse is easy to light different types of fireworks are set up differently.

    • Fireworks marked with a cross on the top are designed to be used on the Blackwidow Fireworks safety stand.

    • These fireworks can also be three-quarters buried in a bucket of sand, or propped up securely with bricks.

    • Other types of fireworks should be set up in accordance with the instructions.

    • When you use a sparkler, only hold and light one at a time. Press the sparkler through the safety disk before use.

  3. Using your fireworks
    • Before lighting any firework, check again that the area is clear.

    • Only light one firework at a time.

    • Check the firework is stable, light the fuse at arms length and get away at least five metres.

    • Each type of firework has a different effect, but you light them in the same way.

    • Check the area first. Then check the firework is stable, light the fuse at arms length and get away at least five metres.

What if the firework does not light or stops half way through?

    • Leave it alone, it could be dangerous.

    • Do not touch the firework for half and hour and then soak it in a bucket of water overnight.

    • Returned faulty fireworks to the supplier or to your WorkCover Authority – just remember to transport them in accordance with the instructions on the package.

Hold one sparkler at a time and light only one sparkler at a time at arms length.

When the sparkler has finished, put it into a bucket of water straight away because it will still be very hot.

  4. It’s time to clean up!

    • Do not touch a used firework for 15 minutes, and then be careful in case it is still hot.

    • First of all, check to see if all of your fireworks have gone off.

    • If there is a firework that has not gone off, soak it in water overnight and then return it to the supplier or to your WorkCover Authority – just remember to transport it in accordance with the instructions on the package.

    • Collect used fireworks and check they are cool by feeling them with your hand. These can go into the general rubbish. Check the area for any fireworks rubbish, and pick up as much as you can.

    • When you have removed all of the fireworks and the area is clean, other people can come back. Don’t forget to go back in the morning to do a final clean up in the light of day!
